HORSE CAVE, KY, June 27, 2019 – Representatives from Dart Container cut the ribbon on a new onsite health center today to increase access to primary care for employees and their families. Dart employs nearly 1,500 people at the Horse Cave facility. The health center—called MyCare Wellness Center—is available only to Dart Container employees and their dependents age 2 and above who are covered by a company medical plan. It will be open to patients beginning July 9.

There has been an ongoing, heated debate over whether Styrofoam can be fully recycled. More than 100 municipalities say it can’t be, while The Restaurant Action Alliance, Dart Container Corp., and many other municipalities say it can. At the least, there is very limited infrastructure to process this material. FRC is trying to change that.

In October and November 2014, Environmental Resources Planning, LLC conducted a comprehensive litter survey of the Anacostia Watershed, which encompassed certain portions of the District of Columbia (DC) as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland. The purpose of this survey was to gauge the amount and composition of litter along roadways and in non-roadway sites in and/or adjacent to waterways identified by Anacostia Watershed Society as indicator streams.

Recently, the University of California, Davis, partnered with Dart Container Corporation for a foam packaging recycling drive. Often mistakenly referred to as Styrofoam, a trademark of Dow, the material is widely used to package many items that students bring to school including televisions and other electronics. The effort resulted in half a truckload being collected. The event was the school’s sixth annual recycling drive and took place as freshmen students moved in for the school year.

The New York State Supreme Court today overturned Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia’s decision to ban foam foodservice items, clearing the way for the City to embrace a recycling program that would cover 100 percent of polystyrene products and generate new revenue for the City.

NYC has announced a “grace period” lasting from July 1, 2015 until January 1, 2016 during which they will NOT issue fines or penalties for business that use foam foodservice containers. Also, nonprofits and small businesses (not part of a chain) with less than $500,000 in revenue per year may apply for hardship exemptions from the Department of Small Business Services (SBS) if they can prove that the purchase of alternative products not composed of EPS would create undue financial hardship.

(New York, NY) – Dart Container Corporation joined with the Restaurant Action Alliance NYC, members of the recycling industry, and the City’s restaurant owners today in filing a lawsuit seeking to overturn the City’s ban on foam foodservice items. Mayor Bill de Blasio, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia are named as respondents in the petition, which was filed against the Commissioner’s erroneous determination that foam cannot be recycled. The determination flagrantly violated Local Law 142 as well as sound environmental and economic policy and plain common sense.
