SACRAMENTO, Calif. (September 18, 2015) – For the eighth consecutive year, Dart Container is bringing foam (often mistakenly referred to as “Styrofoam,” a registered trademark of Dow Chemical) recycling, education and volunteer efforts to the Great American River Clean Up. Last year, over 1,500 volunteers removed more than 21,000 pounds of trash and debris.
On Saturday, September 19, employees from Dart’s Lodi manufacturing facility will join thousands of other volunteers as they pick up trash and debris from the American River Parkway, enhancing a 23-mile stretch of the river. In addition to its support of the Clean Up, Dart is also hosting a one-day foam collection where residents can recycle their used foam and help divert waste from local landfills. This year’s drop-off will take place on Saturday from 9AM to noon at Ancil Hoffman Park, located at 6341 Tarshes Dr., Carmichael, CA 95608. During this time, Dart will collect for processing all clean foam, which can include cups, plates and protective packaging often used to protect electronics like televisions and computers.
“Each year, the Great American River Clean Up contributes to the health of the Parkway and the American River. This event is a great display of the Sacramento community coming together to enhance our waterways. The support of Dart Container helps us repurpose much of the debris we remove from the Parkway,” said Jordan Powell, Volunteer Coordinator with the American River Park Foundation.
Dart employees participating in the Clean Up will also be educating people at the event about foam recycling. Foam stamped with the chasing arrows triangle with the number six in the middle is a thermoform plastic and can be recycled repeatedly. Popular products made with this material include picture frames and crown molding.
“We’re honored to partner with the American River Parkway Foundation for another year. This is a wonderful, collaborative effort to help the community clean up one of California’s most beautiful and life-giving outdoor spaces. It is also important to educate Sacramento residents about the value of recycling foam,” said Ron Crookham, Dart Container’s Lodi Plant Manager.
