LODI, CA – Dart Container Corporation opened its newest post-consumer polystyrene foam (commonly known as Styrofoam®, a registered trademark of The Dow Chemical Company), drop-off site at its Lodi, CA plant. This is the San Joaquin Valley’s first such facility and it accepts foam food service containers, including foam cups, foam plates, foam clamshells, and shape or molded foam packaging, often used to package electronics.
This event was attended by representatives of U.S. Congressman Jerry McNerney and of the San Joaquin County Supervisor Ken Vogel. Christine Flowers-Ewing, Executive Director of Keep California Beautiful noted “To deal with the problem at hand; Keep California Beautiful has been encouraging communities and industry partners to find better ways to use less, recycle more, and get involved as part of a solution. By providing a regional collection point in San Joaquin County, Dart as a manufacturer of the product, is contributing to the solution.” Lisa Barry of the California Integrated Waste Management Board also acknowledged the leadership role that Dart is taking to help develop the expanded polystyrene collection infrastructure statewide and said “Dart’s public-private partnership is commendable.”
After a presentation from Frank Ferral of the Green Team San Joaquin, Dart offered a tour of its recycling facility that included a demonstration of its proprietary foam densifier. The densifier compacted a pile of foam the size of a car into a cylinder the size of a 5 gallon bucket. The event concluded with a barbeque.
