For the third year, Dart Container Corporation is bringing foam recycling, education and volunteers to the Great American River Clean Up.
On September 18, employees from Dart’s Lodi facility will join thousands of other volunteers in picking up trash and debris from the American River Parkway, enhancing a 23‐mile stretch of the river. Last year, 2,000 volunteers removed more than 15,000 pounds of trash and debris from the American River Parkway in just three hours. Participating Dart employees will also educate other volunteers about the recyclability of foam products and encourage them to responsibly dispose of them. Since foam with the number 6 on it ( ) is a thermoplastic, it can be recycled repeatedly and used to make other consumer goods, including premium picture frames, crown molding and agricultural containers.
In addition to its support of the Clean Up, Dart is hosting a one day foam collection where residents can recycle their used foam and help divert waste from local landfills. The Dart drop off will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on the north side of the river at the William Pond Recreation Area. During this time, Dart will collect all clean foam for processing, including cups, plates and packaging foam.
“Each year is a new opportunity for us to make an even greater impact with the Clean Up,” said Stacy Springer, Event/Volunteer Coordinator of American River Parkway Foundation. “We’re so grateful for Dart’s continued partnership and support toward our mutual goal of preserving the Parkway.”
Commonly referred to as “Styrofoam”, a registered trademark of the Dow Chemical Company, foam #6 is a recyclable product that is used in a wide range of products, from foam cups and foodservice containers, to the large molded blocks used to package electronics. Dart is driving foam recycling efforts throughout California and nationally through its programs, and foam drop off‐locations at 13 facilities across the country.
“Our employees really enjoy participating in the Clean Up and helping educate others on the value of recycling,” said Michael Westerfield, Corporate Director of Recycling Programs at Dart Container Corporation. “We are really excited about participating again this year.”
