Residents and businesses can now help divert foam cups and much more through a recycling partnership with Dart Container Corporation

Dover, DE. (October 31, 2011) – The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) today announced a partnership with Dart Container Corporation (Dart), a leading manufacturer of polystyrene foam foodservice products, also known as foam #6, to collect these products at the Delaware Recycling Center (DRC) in New Castle.

Commonly referred to as “Styrofoam”,a registered trademark of the Dow Chemical Company, foam #6 is recyclable and is used in a wide range of products, from foam cups and foodservice containers, to the large molded blocks used to package electronics.

“We’re making recycling these commonly used products as simple and convenient as possible,” said Rich Von Stetten, DSWA Manager of Statewide Recycling. “There is a need for this kind of recycling program, and we are proud to offer it to Delaware residents.”

Polystyrene foam products that will be accepted include clean foodservice products such as foam cups, foam plates, foam egg cartons, as well as foam protective packaging typically used to protect consumer goods and electronics. Once the collection bin is full, Dart picks up and transports the contents to its Leola, PA plant for processing. It is then sold to other manufacturers that use the material to create a variety of new products, including picture frames, crown molding, office products and nursery plant containers.

“This program confirms that there is a market for growing recycling options and the community wants to help divert waste from local landfills”, said Ray Ehrlich, regional manager for government affairs and the environment for Dart.

Delaware is just one of the latest in a growing list of regions that are taking advantage of expanded #6 foam recycling options and infrastructure. Dart strives to collect a variety of foam products, even those that the company does not manufacture, like school lunch trays and packaging foam. Through this, and similar programs nationwide, the company is helping to raise awareness of the recyclability of foam.

DSWA will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to mark the opening of the Polystyrene foam Recycling program on November 16, 2011 at 11:00am at the DRC, which is located at 1101 Lambsons Lane in New Castle. Residents can begin dropping off their Polystyrene foam the same day as the Ribbon Cutting, November 16. The DRC will available for Polystyrene foam drop off Monday-Friday 7am-3pm. The DRC also offers a convenient drop-off location for old computers, televisions, cellular phones and other electronics, as well as a Single Stream Recycling Drop-off.
