New program with Dart Container Corporation provides foam cup recycling and much more for Carroll County

WESTMINSTER, Md. (August 01, 2011) – Dart Container Corporation, a leading manufacturer of foam foodservice products, has announced it is now offering foam recycling to Carroll County, making it the first area in central Maryland with these services.

Through a partnership with Carroll County, Dart Container will collect postconsumer foam from the Northern Landfill in Westminster. Residents, businesses and organizations can recycle their used foam products there, including foodservice products, foam cups, foam plates, foam egg cartons, and foam protective packaging typically used to protect consumer goods and electronics. Once collected, Dart transports the material to its Leola plant for processing. It is then sold to other manufacturers that use the material to create a variety of new products, including premium picture frames, crown molding and nursery plant containers.

Carroll County Recycling Manager Maria Myers approached the company about a potential pilot program. Dart suggested this program and introduced the concept of the countywide recycling program based on similar successful recycling programs in other regions nationally.

The collection and transport of materials are provided at no charge to the County, helping eliminate increased costs associated with this recycling expansion. This also allows many businesses to reduce expenses by saving on waste disposal, helping bolster the local economy. Officials also note that the service will cut down on landfill use.

“After just a week at the landfill, the collection bin has already been filled and emptied,” said Ray Ehrlich, regional manager for government affairs and the environment. “It has been great to see the community taking advantage of this option and helping to divert waste from the Northern Landfill.”

Carroll County is just one of the latest in a growing number of regions that are taking advantage of expanded foam recycling options and infrastructure. As a responsible manufacturer, Dart, is working to help collect a variety of foam products, even those that the company doesn’t manufacturer. Through this and other programs nationally, the company is helping to raise awareness of the recyclability of foam.

Commonly referred to as “Styrofoam”,a registered trademark of the Dow Chemical Company, foam #6 is a recyclable product that is used in a wide range of products, from foam cups and foodservice containers, to the large molded blocks used to package electronics. Residents, businesses and other organizations that are interested in participating can drop off their foam products at 1400 Baltimore Boulevard in Westminster. The foam must have a #6 recycling symbol and be free of any food residue.
