Dart Container Corporation will recycle thousands of donated foam cups At the NC Half Marathon at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Cabarrus County, NC – In partnership with the Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Continental Events and Sports Management group, the inaugural NC Half Marathon is reducing its environmental impact by recycling thousands of foam cups. This sport event is focused on setting a new standard for U.S. athletic events by incorporating green practices into each race.
Continental Events and Sports Management Group, based in Miami, FL is producing the NC Half Marathon on March 25th and has been working with the Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau promoting, marketing and preparing for the event over the last 12 months . The NC Half Marathon has partnered with Dart Container Corporation, the event’s sole provider of recyclable foam cups, to provide 22,000 donated foam cups to be used at the event. “Dart is proud to introduce foam cup recycling to these athletes,” said Ray Ehrlich, regional manager of government affairs and the environment at Dart Container. “We hope this raises awareness and increases the likeliness that they will look for more recycling opportunities when they return home.”
Captured foam cups will be taken to Dart’s facility in Randleman NC, where foam products are accepted for recycling at no cost to the public. This process diverts foam from area landfills and makes it possible for cups to be recycled by grinding them up, converting them to plastic resin pellets, and selling them for reuse as an ingredient in non-food service products, including picture frames or decorative molding.
“We’re committed to hosting greener events, reducing waste, recycling, and reusing whenever possible. We’re proud to showcase foam cup recycling efforts to runners and their families.” said Donna Carpenter, President/CEO, Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Aside from the cup recycling program, Continental has also made changes and improvements to the way they produce and manage their events. They have engaged in a paperless participant communication system including replacing the standard race goody bags with virtual gift bags, and replacing their participant instructions and maps with a smart phone APP with hosting race information. To further their green initiatives, Continental has chosen participant tech shirts that are made of recycled materials, recycling extra finisher medals and using potable water sources wherever possible. “As event planners, it is our responsibility to find ways to be good to Mother Earth. Our green initiatives within our races, are not a just a social responsibility but also a way to give back to our host community by reducing, as much as possible, the carbon footprint of the event”, added Gaby Pozo, Race Director
