Mason, Michigan — Dart Container announced the collection of 72 bags of litter this weekend, that have been cleaned from the Michigan highway with the help of nearly 25 employees, friends and family as part of the company’s fourth annual participation in the Michigan’s Adopt-A-Highway program.
“At Dart, we have a commitment to keeping our communities free of litter,” said Dianne Norton, Human Resources Assistant for Dart Container. “But what really impresses us is our employees shared commitment to improving the environment. And we’re proud to say that for the last several years, thanks to their hard work, our adopted area is one of the cleanest on the highway.”
Beginning in 2010, Dart Container has adopted a two-mile stretch of Highway 127 between Cedar Street Exchange and Railroad Bridge, picking up roadside litter twice a year – in both the Spring and Fall. Last year’s cleanups yielded 80 bags of trash in the Spring, and only 60 during the September Fall cleanup.
“While our manpower is increasing from year to year, we are really excited to see the number of bags we’re collected decreasing,” said Ralph Spitz, Recycle Supervisor. “When we started this program four years ago, we filled more than 100 bags, whereas today, we filled far less than that!”
All litter collected by Dart volunteers will be picked up by Michigan’s Refuge Services. All foam, including dirty food containers, will be taken to Dart to be processed for recycling, and eventually become products like crown molding and picture frames.
“My family and I do our part at home to reduce waste – by recycling foam, plastic and paper,” said Jean Baker, Dart employee and member of highway cleanup team. “Still, we participate each year because it’s our opportunity to help clean up the community for neighbors and to have an even greater impact on the environment.”
Volunteers underwent detailed training prior to the cleanup, which addressed both highway safety and proper handling of litter. To learn more about Michigan’s Adopt-A-Highway program, click here.
